Red Bull Racing

In February 2022, Formula One fans eagerly anticipated the reveal of Red Bull Racing’s re-engineered Formula One car. As the new reigning champions and with radical changes to the car’s design, this new model was the subject of much speculation.

For such an important pre-season fan moment, Red Bull Racing wanted to create an ode to their fans. Tweets from the previous season were used as a graphic device to reveal the car, its contours, and new decals.

We were responsible for art directing the visual direction and then building the projection mapped sequences across the body of the car. This content would help to brand and package the live launch event streamed to millions of fans globally.

Unveiling An Icon

To carry out such a complex brief, a perfect replica of the car needed to be created. Clad entirely in a glossy mid-grey, it allowed the best possible conditions for projecting true vibrancy and contrast of colour.

The team had to work out the best way to project on to such an unusual canvas. Challenges included multiple protrusions blocking the light from any single direction, and stretching issues in hard-to-reach areas. With significant R&D ahead of going to site, the team developed an optimum cylindrical mapping technique which allowed all key areas of the car to be projected, even when using a multiple projector setup.

The Reveals

A key objective of the shoot was to capture three significant reveal moments. Projecting a flurry of fans’ tweets that fill to partially reveal the three most important decals of the car: The new main sponsor Oracle, the updated driver numbers and the all important Red Bull logo.

The red Bull logo on the top air intake area was revealed using a waterfall-like assemblage of hundreds of fan messages. We used Trapcode Particular and masking mattes to partially reveal the separate colours gradually over time.

For this year, Oracle claimed the coveted barge board. We created a hero moment for the logo, that achieved a seamless flow from our projected canvas onto the reveal of the actual car.

On the nose of the car. Red Bull wanted to create a unique moment to reveal to the world that Max Verstappen’s new number as world champion would become No.1 for the coming season. A contoured projection mapped  light animation was built as a visual cue to smoothly transition between the numbers.
