Secret Life of Orangutans

Secret Lives of Orangutans is a Netflix documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough, exploring a remarkable group of orangutans in the jungles of Sumatra. In collaboration with Silverback Films, Hello Charlie developed the film’s branding, opening title sequence, and map design.

Silverback Films, a world-leading producer of natural history films, approached us to create a compelling title sequence for their latest project, Secret Lives of Orangutans. During filming, the unique intelligence and emotional depth of orangutans became strikingly clear. Like humans, baby orangutans cry when hungry, whimper when hurt, and smile when comforted, revealing a remarkable similarity in behaviour and emotion.

DEVELOPMENT

The Orangutans’ stories and their home in Sumatra inspired us to craft a title sequence that is unique, warm and uplifting. The creative developed using visual cues from the intricate and colourful style of Indonesian puppet theatre, using hand crafted artwork, animation, light and shadow guiding the viewer through depictions of their life experiences. The design was further developed into a map animation and end credit sequence, building a unique and memorable brand for Secret Lives Of Orangutans.

TECHNIQUES

We employed a range of techniques to bring our creative vision to life. Our crafted approach dynamically navigates the environment and key individuals, seamlessly transitioning between scenes to reframe the composition and action. We explored movement through light and shade to create depth, space and engaging use of composition, combining the bespoke illustrated artwork, focal techniques, texture and perspective to establish a rich, visually captivating and immersive experience.
