Nightmares of Nature

Nightmares of Nature is a wildlife series like no other. Produced by natural history powerhouse Plimsoll and horror legends Blumhouse, it blends the beauty of the natural world with a dark twist. Hello Charlie was brought on board to deliver stunning VFX shots across the series, a striking title plate and show branding.

WOODS & JUNGLE

The six-part series is split into two chapters: Cabin in the Woods and Lost in the Jungle

In the Woods chapters, we created a range of fire and smoke VFX, everything from subtle flame comps to a full-scale inferno consuming a remote cabin. These effects added intensity and realism to the forest scenes, helping bring the danger and atmosphere of the story to life.

For the Jungle episodes, Plimsoll needed exterior shots of an abandoned, overgrown laboratory deep in the rainforest. While the interior was built as a practical set, creating the exterior physically wasn’t feasible. Hello Charlie stepped in to design and deliver fully VFX-based exteriors, along with virtual production backdrops that seamlessly matched the studio shoot-ensuring visual continuity across the entire sequence.

For the Woods chapter, we proposed a hybrid approach to the fire and smoke VFX. For the interior scenes, we used carefully composited stock elements to create realistic, contained flames. However, for the wide exterior shot of the cabin engulfed in fire, we needed a more controlled and specific burn progression that stock couldn’t deliver.

To achieve this, we turned to EmberGen, which offered the ideal balance of speed and visual fidelity. Using fluid simulations, we crafted dynamic fire and smoke that built and spread exactly as the scene required-delivering a dramatic, cinematic blaze that elevated the sequence.

For the Jungle sequences, we suggested using Unreal Engine to build the rainforest exteriors, taking advantage of its ability to handle dense geometry and enable fast creative iteration.

Brought in early during pre-production, we didn’t work with a locked shot list or durations. Instead, we created a library of versatile GVs (general views) at different times of day and in varying weather conditions, giving the edit team maximum flexibility. As the edit took shape, we received more specific feedback and refined the selected shots to ensure they aligned perfectly with the evolving narrative.

We delivered a substantial body of work that included destruction simulations, large-scale fire and smoke fluid effects, and a vast, fully CG jungle environment.

Throughout the project, we drew on our technical expertise to select the right tools for each creative challenge-whether it was using Unreal Engine for complex jungle builds or EmberGen for high-impact fire simulations. Our flexible, solution-driven approach ensured every shot met the high cinematic standards of the series.

BRANDING

We began by selecting a suitably spooky typeface that captured the eerie tone of the series. From there, we explored a range of animation treatments, including ghostly evaporations using defocus, scale, and opacity effects, as well as custom ink matte dissolves that gave the text an organic fade. These approaches were refined into a final style that could be applied seamlessly across multiple backplates. Once approved, we delivered the full set of episode titles and pre-title cards, ensuring a consistent and atmospheric identity for the show’s opening moments.
